Steelhead (November - May)
Salmon River winter steelhead
* Rods, reels, fly lines, and flies are optional to bring as all this equipment will be provided on your guided trip.
*A hearty lunch is provided on your guided trip - if you have special dietary needs, please bring the appropriate food/drink with you.
  • line weight - 6,7, or 8 wt. rod (9-10 ft.)
  • Orvis Wonderline running line
  • fast sink tip line comparable to Orvis
  • intermediate sink tip line
  • 20 lb. backing on all fly lines
  • 12 1/2 - 14 ft. spey (double handed) rod, 7-8 wt. with Rio spey line(interchangeable tips - fast sink density, medium sink, intermediate and floating tips)
  • reel - start-up inertia on drag system must be very smooth because light tippet is often used. An excellent reel for the money is the Orvis Battenkill large arbor #4 - an anti-reverse. Most reel manufacturers offer excellent drag systems for light tippets.
  • This list of flies will serve as the basis for the beginning of a good arsenal, although much can be done wtih all the basic patterns to put your own personal twist on them. Steelhead love creativity!
  • size 10/12 globugs in variety of colors (pink, chartreuse, orange, charisse)
  • size 10/12 black stone flies - body dubbed in black and chartreuse
  • size 12 pheasant tail
  • size 8 wooley bugger - beadhead
  • double egg patterns same color as globugs tied on #8 or #10
  • estaz flies tied in #10 or #12 with a little globug yarn mixed in are excellent attractors
  • size 10/12 caddis pupae in olive
  • multiple layers of clothing are necessary for fall, winter, and spring steelhead seasons
  • Duofolds, silk, polypropelene, or the like, should be used as undergarments from neck to toe. 300 mil polar fleece pants as well as 300 mil polar fleece shirt and jacket with wind block is preferred - everything should be looes fitting and very comfortable with a rain jacket.
  • wool type hunting clothes or the like can also be used for cold weather days - the key is to have layers that can be taken off or put on depending on the weather for the day
  • hats range from baseball type non-insulated caps to heavily thinsulated or polar fleece lined hats - earflaps are sometimes appreciated if the wind picks up
  • Waders for fall, winter, and sprin should be 1 1/2 - 2 sizes oversized. This will allow for a thin polyproplene sock against your skin to wick moisture and a very thick heavy wool sock to keep your feet warm with plenty of dead air space around your foot without feeling that it's a tight fit.
  • Insulated boots on waders are important for cold water fishing (we have Orvis insulated boot foot rental waders availabe for $20/day - men's sizes 7-13)
  • raingear
  • fingerless wool gloves (if not to keep hands warm, always to handle fish)
  • wading staff
  • polarized sunglasses
  • sunscreen
  • camera

  • Fish are very aggressive, so subsurface flies in a large assortment of streamers are very effective
  • These fish can be fished over in shorts with a pair of wading shoes (preferably with felts) or very light waders as the water is generally in the 60's and air temperatures can be very warm this time of year.
  • Early mornings can be cool, so you may want a pullover that can be slipped off after the first hour.
  • raingear
  • fingerless wool gloves (if not to keep hands warm, always to handle fish)
  • wading staff
  • polarized sunglasses
